Gingrich rails against Obama at California GOP convention

With his competition focused on the chilly Midwest, Newt Gingrich wooed California's Republican faithful Saturday, banking on a Republican contest so chaotic that the most populous state in the country could actually matter when voters go to the polls in June."You cannot follow the recent Republican practice of writing off our largest state and imagine that you are going to run an American campaign," the former House speaker told delegates to the state party convention, meeting outside of San Francisco. "There will not be any lockdown before we get to California.... I want you to know as the nominee I will campaign consistently in California."
That was as close as Gingrich came to acknowledging Republican front-runners Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum during a withering 48-minute luncheon speech in a packed hotel ballroom. Instead, he trained his sights on President Obama, who he said is "fundamentally dishonest" and "lives in a fantasy world."
Although most of his address was a point-by-point attack on Obama's recent energy speech in Miami, Gingrich also took the president to task for his response to the inadvertent burning of Korans at a U.S. military base in Afghanistan.
Two American military officers were killed in a heavily secured compound by an unknown assailant Saturday, during nearly a week of angry anti-American protests. On Thursday, Obama had personally apologized for the burning of the holy books.
"I find it very offensive as commander in chief that he is apologizing to the Afghans when in fact he should be demanding an apology from [Afghan President Hamid] Karzai," Gingrich said to much applause.
It was part of a litany of Gingrich-Obama contrasts the former Georgia congressman spelled out to cheers Saturday afternoon, a warm reception that belied a recent poll showing him trailing badly in California, No. 4 in the four-man field.
"If you believe the world is dangerous and America should be strong, then Newt Gingrich is your candidate," he said. "If you think the U.S. is inevitably weak and guilty and we should run around the world apologizing and appeasing, then Barack Obama is your candidate."
Do you want $2.50-a-gallon gasoline, an "American energy policy" and "never again bow to a Saudi king"? Then Gingrich is your man, he said. Ditto if you like job creation, paychecks and religious liberty.
And what does a vote for Obama mean? Food stamps, he thundered. Dependency. The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals with its liberal bias and "religious bigotry." Gas that costs $10 a gallon, an anti-energy energy secretary and "weakness requiring us to depend on foreigners for our energy."
The specter of $10-a-gallon gas was the focus of Gingrich's ire Saturday. He derided Obama's energy speech as "factually false, intellectually incoherent, deeply conflicted on policy and in some places just strange." He called the president "a genuine left-winger," as anti-liberty as he is anti-oil drilling.
Obama "believes in small cars," Gingrich said. "He believes in an anti-American energy policy. He believes in high prices. He believes in government control. The challenge is he's running for reelection. The American people actually want the car and truck they like. The American people are pro-American energy."
While Obama has rejected the controversial Keystone pipeline ? which would bisect the United States en route from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico ? Gingrich said Saturday that he would authorize the oil pipeline on his first day as president. (Some criticism of the pipeline has come from Republicans in Nebraska, through which it would pass.)
Noting that Obama said there "are no silver bullets" for the high price of gasoline in America, Gingrich said "there is a pen. Big difference.
"A presidential pen could today sign approval of the Keystone pipeline," he said. "That's 700,000 barrels a day. A presidential pen could today sign approval to go back to the Gulf of Mexico. That's about 400,000 barrels a day. A presidential pen could today approve areas of Alaska that we know have oil."
In three signatures, Gingrich said, "you would have 2.3 million barrels a day additional energy in the United States. So I would say, we're not looking for silver bullets. We're looking for presidential leadership."
Although many in the audience were still undecided about their presidential choice, his talk of cheap gas resonated with Judy Thompson of Vacaville, a retired associate warden who worked for the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
She drives a 10-year-old car with 200,000 miles on it, gets $400 in Social Security each month and drives 40 miles or more a day volunteering at a charity that houses homeless veterans and working for Assembly candidate Mike Hudson.
"If we could afford to buy new cars, we probably would," said Thompson, who supports Gingrich. "I stay busy, but I might have to cut back because of the cost of gasoline."

Expert: Beijing's polluted air could shorten life
This past winter Beijing has seen some of the worst air pollution since the government promised more "blue sky" days after the 2008 Olympic Games. NBC's Adrienne Mong reports.

BEIJING ? Earlier this month, a U.S. study on the economic impact of China?s air pollution was released with little fanfare. Maybe it was because of the series of successive ?blue sky? days we were enjoying in the Chinese capital, thanks to the gusty winds blowing down from Mongolia.?
The study, which was conducted by researchers at the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change, breaks down costs that result from the health impacts from ozone and particulate matter, which typically lead to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
The conclusion? ?[D]espite improvements in overall air quality,? the cost of air pollution (as in lost economic productivity growth) in China has mushroomed from $22 billion in 1975 to $112 billion in 1995. But for at least one pair of 29-year old software engineers in Beijing, air pollution has actually meant greater economic productivity and a business opportunity.
A killer app
Wang Jun and Zhang Bin each moved to Beijing in 2001 to attend college.??Zhang, a Fujian native, was a math major at Beijing University while Wang left Inner Mongolia to study traffic infrastructure at Jiaotong University.
They met at a high-tech company, where for three years they worked together.?Last year, they decided to strike out on their own and set up Fresh Ideas Studio.
?The primary aim ? is creating mobile apps for solving practical problems in our daily lives,??Wang said, on?a blustery (but sunny) afternoon at a coffee shop.
Last year saw some of the worst air pollution in Beijing since the 2008 Summer Olympics, spurring intense discussion among Chinese residents, teeth-gnashing among Western expats, and a near-diplomatic spat between the U.S. and China over fine particulate matter in the air known as PM2.5 that can wreak havoc on the respiratory system.
?Recently, the media and Weibo [a popular Chinese microblog like Twitter] users are very concerned about air quality, especially in Beijing,? Wang said.
In particular, there was a lot of online chatter about @Beijing Air, the U.S. embassy Twitter account that posts hourly Air Quality Index(AQI) data.?
The readings come from an air quality monitor that sits on top of the embassy in downtown Beijing, and they differ sharply from the daily results posted by the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP).

The 2.0 version of Fresh Ideas Studio's app shows both U.S. and Chinese air quality readings.
AQI values on @BeijingAir range from 0 to 500.? A ?good? AQI ?is 0 to 50 or what the Chinese call a ?blue sky? day.? Unfortunately, many days in 2011 qualified as ?unhealthy? to ?hazardous.?? But on some of those same days, MEP data maintained the levels were ?good? or ?moderate.?? (The Chinese, in fact, claim there were 286 "blue sky" days in 2011.)
?The [Beijing] government says that nearly 80 percent of the days in the last two years met at least the Chinese standard and therefore had good or even excellent air quality,? Steve Andrews, an environmental consultant who has analyzed the @BeijingAir data, said.??While when we look at the U.S. Embassy data ? over 80 percent days exceeded what would be considered healthy air quality and more days were hazardous than good.?
Andrews said that Beijing's pollution levels were "six or seven times higher than the U.S.'s most polluted city." "Air pollution at these levels likely shortens life expectancy by about five years," he added.
The discrepancy was due to the fact the U.S. embassy monitor includes PM2.5, a fine particulate matter measuring 2.5 micrometers in diameter that, according to the EPA, ?pose the greatest health risks [and] can lodge deeply into the lungs.?
The Chinese data, however, only measured the much coarser PM10 particles.

?I?m a Twitter user and saw many Tweets about [@BeijingAir],??Zhang said. ?Many Weibo users reposted the data, too.?
The software developers decided to try creating a smartphone application that based itself on the @BeijingAir data.
?Sometimes we can tell there?s a gap between what we feel and the data from the government,??Wang said.? ?This is probably why many prefer the data provided by the U.S. embassy.?
In November, they released a 1.0 version, available only in Chinese and which came with simple but appealing graphics.? On good AQI days, the screen background was light and featured a hiking boot, indicating it was time to be outdoors.?On bad AQI days, the screen background turned dark, an X marked the boot, and a person?s face wrapped in a mask would pop up.
There were iOS and Android versions of the app.?Within weeks, it had been downloaded 80,000 times.?At least half of those users checked the app regularly, according to Wang.?
Pollution 'ignored' in past
Under popular pressure that has been building since last year, Chinese environment authorities in Beijing have agreed to publish PM2.5 data.?But they maintain the air quality has improved steadily in recent years.?
?We may have had bad pollution in the past, but people probably didn?t pay too much attention to it before so it was just ignored,??said An Xinxin, who works in the Automatic Monitoring Office at the Beijing Environmental Protection Monitoring Center.?
The Center relies on anywhere from?30 to?40 monitoring stations.??Almost every district and county in Beijing has its own station,? explained An.??So citizens in every district and county can know what the pollution in their own area is like.?
Like many of his colleagues at the municipal level, An pointed out that the U.S. embassy only uses one monitor.??[It] can only represent one spot at a certain time.?Their spot might be very close to the road where there is a lot of vehicle exhaust, which causes a high level of PM2.5,? he said.??Our statistics are an average of Beijing as a whole, not just one spot.?
Zhang has lived in Beijing for more than ten years, but he said he?s not sure whether the air quality has improved or not.??I don?t know if it?s because now I pay more attention [because of the media and online discussion], or if it?s because the air quality has worsened,? he said.?
But he and Wang dreamed up the idea of incorporating both the Chinese and American data streams into their app.
On Monday this week, they introduced a 2.0 version that not only posts real-time data from the U.S. embassy in Beijing and U.S. consulates around China, it also includes data from the Chinese Ministry of Environment?s monitoring centers in 120 cities across the country.
Also available in English, the app has been downloaded nearly 5,000 times.
?We thought it was good to include both.?In some cities, users might want alternative information,? Wang said. ?If there were a third source for air pollution data, we?d probably include it in the app, too.?
They might also?want to add Hong Kong to their list of cities.
This month, a local nongovernmental group said Hong Kong?s air is 20 per cent more deadly than the air in mainland China.?
Using data from Hong Kong?s own government and the World Health Organization, the Clean Air Network?ranked Hong Kong ahead of mainland China, India, Vietnam, and Bangladesh for its high air pollution mortality rates.

Republican Delegate Bob Marshall, an abortion rights opponent who introduced the legislation, said the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion in the United States would not have been rendered if Texas state law had regarded the unborn as a person "in the full sense."
"So this is a first step, a necessary step, but it's not sufficient to directly challenge Roe," Marshall said in a phone interview.
A spokesman for Republican Governor Bob McDonnell said the governor would review the measure if the Senate sent it to his desk but did not give any insight into whether McDonnell would sign it into law.
Virginia's approach differs from failed attempts to define a fertilized egg as a legal person in Colorado in 2008 and 2010, and in Mississippi in 2011 where voters rejected the measure.
Virginia's effort avoids involving a constitutional amendment like those states, instead seeking changes throughout the legal code, said Elizabeth Nash, public policy associate at the Washington-based Guttmacher Institute, which studies reproductive health issues.
But she said the intent was the same, with the measure ultimately aimed at banning abortion, contraception and infertility treatment.
"Should this bill become law, it could have a far-reaching impact on women's access to health care," Nash said. "No state, as yet, has adopted anything like this."
Marshall said the measure did not have the authority to ban birth control or infertility treatment.
"Let's just say that the imaginations of the opponents are fertile, but their arguments are sterile," he said.

Similar legislation failed last year in the Virginia Senate, which was then controlled by Democrats.

We'll know in good time. But for now, the singer/actress tweeted out a photo teasing a super-secret special project she is working on with MTV. The photo features her wrists, emblazoned with her tattoos that read "Stay Strong." The picture offers up a couple of hints: the date "3.6.2012" and the hashtag #staystrong.
"Lovatics-I wanted to tell you FIRST about a special I worked on with @MTV," she tweeted. "It premieres March 6th at 10pm!! #staystrong."
Lovato first showed off the ink back in March 2011, just two months after she left an Illinois treatment center to deal with personal issues including an eating disorder and cutting.
"The journey that I went through and the support of my fans was so meaningful to me that I wanted to thank my fans in a way that I know can never be forgotten," the singer said in 2011.
"It's something that my fans were actually drawing on their wrists while I was still in treatment," she explained about the significance of her tattoos. "Some people even got tattoos of it, so I wanted to show you guys that I will never forget the support that you guys gave me."
Since returning to the spotlight, she has focused on her music career, including her 2011 album, Unbroken, which launched her empowering hit single "Skyscraper." Her next single is "Give Your Heart a Break."
Lovato has become a voice for young people struggling with personal issues. In December, she visited and spoke to patients at the Timberline Knolls Center, where she had received treatment.
"To be able to share my story and let them know that it gets easier ... Life is beautiful ... you are worthy of it," Lovato said. "Please say a prayer for all of those struggling with eating disorders, self-harm, mood disorders and substance abuse."

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? U.N. nuclear inspectors starting a two-day visit to Tehran on Monday sought to meet Iranian nuclear scientists and visit a key military facility as they try to gauge allegations that Iran is pushing toward making an atomic weapon.
The trip is the second in less than a month by the International Atomic Energy Agency team, reflecting growing concerns over alleged weapons experiments ? something Iran has so far both denied and refused to discuss.
Herman Nackaerts, a senior U.N. nuclear official, said in Vienna before the team departed on Sunday that he hoped for progress in the talks but his careful choice of words suggested little expectation the meeting will be successful.
The trip came as Iran announced air defense wargames to practice protecting nuclear and other sensitive sites, the latest in a series of military maneuvers viewed as a message to the West that Iran is prepared both to defend itself against an armed strike and to retaliate.
The U.S. and Israel have not ruled out military action against Iran's nuclear program, which they say is geared toward making weapons. Iran denies the charges and insists the program is for peaceful purposes only, such as power generation.
Iran's state radio said Monday the IAEA inspectors hope to meet Iranian nuclear scientists and visit the Parchin military complex. The report said the IAEA had requested to visit Parchin, an Iranian military base and conventional weapons development facility outside of Tehran. The site has also been suspected of housing a secret underground facility used for Iran's nuclear program, a claim denied by Iranian authorities.
IAEA inspectors visited the site in 2005, but went to only one of four areas of potential interest within the grounds. At the time, the nuclear watchdog did not report any unusual activities but the Parchin site was prominently mentioned in the agency's report last year.
The report asserted that Iran constructed "a large explosives containment vessel" in which to conduct experiments on triggering a nuclear explosion, apparently 11 years ago, adding that it had satellite images "consistent with this information."
"Whatever the reasoning of the agency is, it proves the IAEA is not loyal to its previous commitments," the Iranian radio said. The tone of the commentary suggested the visit to the military complex would likely be denied.
The IAEA visit comes as Iran last week announced what it described as key advancements in its nuclear program, inserting the first domestically made fuel rod into a research reactor in Tehran and installing a new generation of Iranian-made centrifuges at the country's main uranium enrichment facility in the central town of Natanz.
Beyond concerns about the purported weapons work, Washington and its allies want Iran to halt uranium enrichment, which they believe could eventually lead to weapons-grade material and the production of nuclear weapons. Iran has been enriching uranium up to 20 percent, while uranium enriched to more than 90 percent can be used for a nuclear warhead.
The IAEA team wants to talk to key Iranian scientists suspected of working on an alleged weapons program. They also hope to break down opposition to their plans to inspect documents related to nuclear work and secure commitments from Iranian authorities to allow future visits.
The IAEA summarized its information last November in a 13-page document drawing on 1,000 pages of intelligence. It stated then for the first time that some of the alleged experiments can have no other purpose than developing nuclear weapons.
Iran has denied alleged weapons experiments for nearly four years, saying they are based on "fabricated documents" provided by a "few arrogant countries" ? a phrase authorities in Iran often use to refer to the U.S. and its allies.
Also Monday, Iran's official news agency reported that the military had begun a four-day air defense war game dubbed "Sarollah," or "God's Revenge," in the south of the country.
Anti-aircraft batteries, radar, and warplanes will be involved in the maneuvers aimed at increasing coordination between the regular military and the powerful Revolutionary Guard in defending sensitive facilities including nuclear sites, IRNA reported.
The exercises will be held over 73,000 square miles (190,000 square kilometers) near the port of Bushehr, the site of Iran's lone nuclear power plant.
Iran has held multiple air, land, and sea maneuvers in recent months as the tensions increase.

2. Copy "Pony-Patch" folder from the ISO to your desktop. This folder contains the activation patches (for both versions; x32 & x64).

3. Start Autodesk 3ds Max 2012 installation. When it asks you for serial, select I have my product information as shown in the following picture:

4. Install as usual
ACTIVATION:
1. Restart Autodesk Product
Before clicking on "Activate", Disconnect from the internet
2. Click Activate.
If you get the following window, click Back, then press Activate again.
3. Pick "I have an activation code from Autodesk"
This will give you a request code, copy (Ctrl+C) and paste to notepad. You will need this to get your activation code.
4. Open the Pony-Patch folder and start XFORCE Keygen 32bits version if you are installing a 32bits application and 64bits if you are installing a 64bits application.
Make sure you run the Keygen as administrator and with UAC off in Vista or Windows7
5. Click on Mem Patch (you should see successfully patched).
6. Copy the request code (which you previously copied to notepad) into the keygen and press generate
This will give you a group of numbers and digits, 56 in all
Now copy the activation code, all 56, into box #1. This will fill the boxes with the codes.
IMPORTANT: When you paste the activation code, it may not fill all the boxes. This is OK. Just press Next and you will see !!

Spanish player dies from heart failure

MADRID (AP) -Spanish news agency Efe has reported that a 21-year-old Spanish football player has died from heart failure suffered after a training session.
Luis Miguel Lastra was found late Friday in the stairwell of his home following practice with his club Ciudad Jardin, of the Andalucia first division in a regional league.
Ciudad Jardin president Jose Bonilla told Efe the player's death was "natural, as a result of heart failure."
Lastra's death follows deaths of other Spanish football players from heart-related problems in recent years, including Espanyol captain Daniel Jarque and Sevilla's Antonio Puerta.
