Milk intake in teens tied to later prostate cancer (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? Older Icelandic men who remember chugging a lot of milk in their teens are three times as likely to be diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer as more-moderate milk drinkers, researchers have found.

That makes them wonder whether the years around puberty, during which the prostate matures, could be a time of heightened vulnerability for the gland.

"We believe that our data are indeed solid and provide important evidence for the role of adolescence as a 'sensitive period' for prostate cancer development," Johanna Torfadottir, a nutrition scientist and a graduate student at the University of Iceland, told Reuters Health by email.

"However, we remain cautious in our interpretation," she added. "Causal inferences are not made on one study alone, thus more studies are needed to confirm our findings and also to explore possible mechanism behind this association."

So far, she added, the two studies on prostate cancer and milk intake in adolescents have come to mixed conclusions -- one found milk lovers seemed to be somewhat protected against the disease, while the other found no link at all.

But both studies were small and couldn't distinguish between advanced and early-stage tumors, Torfadottir said.

By contrast, Iceland offers the perfect "natural experiment," she and her colleagues write in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

The country had little infrastructure in the early part of the 20th century, so people in rural areas tended to live off the land. That included lots of milk from farm animals in central regions of the island, whereas the drink was scarce in seaside villages.

For their study, the researchers used data from more than 2,200 men born between 1907 and 1937. These men had been part of a medical study started in the 1960s and, in the early 2000s, had answered questions about their diet in early and mid-life as part of another study.

Among 463 men who recalled drinking milk less than once a day in their teens, one percent developed advanced prostate cancer or died of the disease over a quarter century of follow-up.

That figure was three percent among the more than 1,800 men who said they drank milk at least daily in adolescence.

The gap couldn't be explained by how often people had gone to the doctor for check-ups, their education or other foods they ate, such as fish or meat.

How much milk men drank had no connection to their risk of early-stage tumors, however. And intake in midlife -- the age group most other studies have focused on -- didn't seem to matter either.

Torfadottir said there are several physiological mechanisms that might, in principle, explain the link between she found. But at this point, all of them remain speculative.

"From these data alone we cannot recommend that teenage boys should chance their dietary habits," she said. "We are only looking at the risk of one disease, prostate cancer, and obviously risks of other conditions, e.g. bone health, need to be considered."

PREMATURE TO SAY 'CAUSES'

Dr. Matthew Cooperberg, a urologist at the University of California, San Francisco, agreed.

"It would be premature to say that drinking milk causes prostate cancer," he told Reuters Health. "You can talk about association, but it is hard to prove causality."

He added that people shouldn't be wary of drinking milk.

"There are plenty of health benefits from drinking milk in adolescence," Cooperberg said.

Torfadottir also ventured a bit of nutritional advice, noting that it's "important to have a balanced diet and moderate milk consumption is a part of that."

Ron Paul?s Words: Opposes Israel as Aggressors; Israel?s Arabs their Victims

By: Arlen Williams
Gulag Bound

Ron Paul on Gaza, ?To me, I look at it like a concentration camp and people are making homemade bombs, and like they?re the aggressors??

Paul went on to decry America?s support of Israel over the Arab League nations and lets slip his personal opinion that Israel is essentially the villain and that ?Palestinians? are their victims.

Ron Paul at 2:04 in the recording, emphasis added:

You know, if Israel has a problem that they have to deal with, I don?t think it should be any of our business. It?s just that it?s our business and we will be blamed because we support Israel blindly, so, and we give them the money and we give them the weapons. That should be the contention that we approach here and Congress should know about and the American People should know about. And then, if I personally favor one side or the other side, it?s really pretty academic, because politically, I don?t want to be involved. I want to say ?Well, you know I think the Palestinians have been ripped off and therefore all the blame is on Israel,? I?ve sort of stepped in a little bit more than I want to. I can have a personal opinion but politically, my position is that America would be much better off we we just minded our own business and of course I always tie this into the financial calamity that our foreign policy creates.

New Ford Fusion Will Warn Drivers Who Drift

December 29, 2011, 8:27 pm By PAUL STENQUIST

Ford Motor Company offered on Thursday a taste of some advanced technology that will be featured in the all-new Fusion, which is scheduled to be introduced at the Detroit auto show in January. The technical tidbit is a tracking system that can help prevent drowsy or inattentive drivers from wandering out of their lane. While similar technology has previously been offered on some automobiles, Octavio Navarro, a Ford spokesman, said in a telephone interview that the Fusion will be the first affordable nonluxury vehicle to offer this type of system.

Fusion?s Lane Keeping System monitors the vehicle?s position with a windshield-mounted digital camera that can track lane markings. If the car drifts close to the edge of the lane without the turn signal on, the driver will be notified by a vibration in the steering wheel that feels much like the pulsing caused by rumble strips in the road. A system that Ford calls Lane Keeping Aid can steer the car back toward the center of the lane if the driver doesn?t respond to the warning.

If the Lane Keeping System calculates that the driving pattern over a period of time suggests that the driver is drowsy, a chime sounds and a coffee cup icon warning appears on the instrument panel. If the driver continues to nap, a second chime is issued.

According to a Ford news release, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 100,000 reported accidents are caused annually by drowsy drivers, resulting in 1,500 deaths, 71,000 injuries and $12.5 billion in monetary loses.

The system must be turned on by the driver, who can choose to employ just the alert function without the steering assist. The intensity of the warnings is also driver selectable. The switched-on system becomes active at speeds over 40 m.p.h. when lane markings are visible.

?Fusion?s Lane Keeping System combines a digital imaging sensor with our own state-of-the-art control software to process images and determine what level of warning or assistance to provide to the driver,? Michale Kane, Ford development engineer, said in a media release.

The all-new Fusion is a very important car for Ford, because it will determine how big a role the automaker plays in the large and lucrative midsize marketplace. Few will be surprised if more details are disseminated before the big reveal at Detroit?s Cobo Hall.

Fisker Automotive Recalls Karma Over Battery Issue | EarthTechling

by Nino Marchetti, December 29th, 2011

Green car manufacturer Fisker Automotive has had its share of challenges on the way to introducing the Karma to the American market, including criticism and delays in delivery. Now, in light of a recent problem from its battery supplier, a recall is thrown into the mix.

Fisker?s battery supplier for the Karma, A123, recently said that it found a potential safety issue in which the hose clamps that are part of the battery?s internal cooling system were misaligned, being positioned in such a way that it could potentially cause a coolant leak that could cause an electrical short circuit. Initially it was said only 50 or so vehicles were impacted by this, but now, in a recall filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, that number has jumped to 239 models (less than 40 are ?believed to have been delivered to consumers? though, with the remaining still in dealer inventory).

Fisker said in this filing that certain model 2012 Karmas manufactured from July 1 through November 3 of this year are impacted by the issue which, if a short occurs, could potentially start a fire. The auto manufacturer noted it plans to notify owners that its dealers will replace the high-voltage battery at no cost to the owner, and that the safety recall is expected to commence in January 2012.

The over $100,000 luxury green car from Fisker is certainly not the first of its kind this year to have this type of high profile safety issue. GM?s Chevy Volt, for example, is being looked at for potential fire issues related to its battery packs that could occur a short time after an accident in the vehicle happens. Nissan, for its part, says its growing in popularity Leaf electric vehicle?s batteries were ?tsunami tested? and quite safe.

Junior dos Santos won't fight Frank Mir for revenge, predicts Lesnar has early advantage against Overeem

Photo of Frank Mir right after he submitted Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 140 in Dec. 2011.

Revenge is best when you get it yourself.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos has been giving his thoughts on the recent submission loss of his mentor, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, at the hands of former division champion Frank Mir at UFC 140 on Dec. 10, 2011.

Nogueira, who serves as "Cigano's" Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructor, has suffered two defeats at the hands of Mir -- via technical knockout at UFC 92 back in 2008 and, most recently, Mir broke "Minotauro's" arm after he refused to tap to a kimura at the aforementioned UFC 140 earlier this month.

With the submission victory, Mir became the first man to ever submit the jiu-jitsu black belt, to go along with being the first to ever stop "Big Nog" via strikes in their initial encounter.

However, don't expect the young champion to seek out a revenge fight for his friend.

Speaking to Tatame.com, Dos Santos says that should he ever get the opportunity to fight Mir, he won't do it to get revenge for Nogueira, but rather, would like to see "Minotauro" get revenge on his own.

Check it out:

Star-divide

"I just think it was a complicated fight for all Brazilians, mainly for us at Team Nogueira. He (Rodrigo) had the win in his hands and with Frank Mir knocked out in front of him, and, for some reason, he didn't keep punching him, he tried to fit a guillotine choke and Frank Mir was lucky enough to grab his arm, and grabbed the chance when he had one. The problem was that he broke Rodrigo's arm, and he has just recovered, and now he'll stay some time off. But we know it already; I know what it'll be the result of it: Rodrigo will come back and bring much joy to all of us. I don't need to revenge him. I guess there's no such thing; I guess he (Rodrigo) can do it himself. But I confess I have never picked out opponents and I won't, but if someday I fight Frank Mir, absolutely it'd be an interesting fight."

In a sense, "Cigano" has already obtained revenge for Nogueira once before. On Nov. 12, 2011, at the inaugural UFC on Fox 1 show, dos Santos knocked out Cain Velasquez in the first round to become the new UFC heavyweight champion. In the process, he avenged a previous loss of Nogueira to Velasquez, which he suffered at UFC 110 on Feb. 21, 2010, in "The Land Down Under."

A third fight between Mir and Nogueira is highly unlikely given the outcome of the previous two bouts. Even though dos Santos wouldn't mind a fight with Mir in the future, he has much bigger fish to fry in his first title defense.

Much, much bigger.

That's because "Cigano" will take on the winner of this weekend's (Dec. 30, 2011) colossal heavyweight clash at UFC 141 between Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem.

A match up that he believes can go either way:

"It's a tough fight for the both of them. I'm saying it'll be 50-50, but Brock has more chances on the beginning of the fight because he's more explosive and goes for it."

Dos Santos is currently rehabbing from successful knee surgery he had to repair a torn meniscus that he damaged prior to his title fight with Velasquez.

Should a fight between "Cigano" and Mir ever come to fruition, will the Brazilian bomber have better results than those of his mentor Nogueira? Does he stand a chance against the Lesnar-Overeem winner?

Opinions, please.

North Korean power-behind-throne emerges as neighbors meet (Reuters)

SEOUL/BEIJING (Reuters) ? North Korean television Sunday showed power-behind-the-throne Jang Song-thaek in the uniform of a general in a sign of his growing sway after the death of Kim Jong-il, and Japan's prime minister said the region faced a new phase with Kim's demise.

Footage that North Korean television said was shot on Saturday showed Jang on the frontrow of top military officers who accompanied Kim Jong-un, the youngest son of Kim Jong-il and his anointed successor, paying their respects before Kim's body.

The choreography around Kim's death is one of the secretive North's few, opaque clues to the emerging configuration of power in this poor and isolated state that has rattled neighbors with nuclear tests and military brinkmanship.

A Seoul official familiar with North Korea affairs said it was the first time Jang has been shown on state television in a military uniform. His appearance suggested that Jang has secured a key role in the North's powerful military, which has pledged its allegiance to Kim Jong-un.

North Korea announced Monday Kim Jong-il had died of a heart attack on December 17. His body is lying in state in a mausoleum in Pyongyang. He was believed to be 69.

Kim Jong-un was hailed by state media Saturday as "supreme commander" of the North's 1.1 million-strong armed forces, the title held by his father.

A senior source told Reuters this week Pyongyang will shift from a strongman dictatorship to a coterie of rulers including the military and Jang, Kim Jong-un's uncle.

Jang married the daughter of the country's revolutionary founder, Kim Il-sung, in 1972, joining the ruling family that has forged its own form of dynastic rule.

"AN NEW PHASE"

In Beijing, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda told Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao that their two countries shared a stake in preserving stability in North Korea in a "new phase."

"The death of Secretary-General Kim Jong-il has brought East Asia to a new phase," Noda told Wen at the start of bilateral talks in China's capital.

Noda is the first regional leader to visit Beijing since Kim Jong-il's death was announced Monday, leaving his young son Kim Jong-un as leader of North Korea, which has rattled the region with nuclear tests and military confrontation.

But Beijing is acutely sensitive about upsetting North Korea, especially during the current delicate transition, and Wen and Noda kept their public remarks free of controversy.

"Both sides agreed that preserving the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula serves the interests of all sides," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in its account of their talks, according to the ministry website (www.mfa.gov.cn).

Wen and Noda also agreed on seeking an early restart of the six-party nuclear disarmament talks that North Korea abandoned.

China is North Korea's sole major economic and diplomatic partner, and the United States and its regional allies have long pressed Beijing to use its influence to rein in Pyongyang.

China has sought to defuse confrontation by hosting six-party nuclear disarmament talks since August 2003. The now-stalled negotiations bring together North and South Korea, China, the United States, Japan and Russia.

In April 2009, North Korea said it was quitting the talks and reversing nuclear "disablement" steps, unhappy with implementation of an initial disarmament deal.

Constraining North Korea is especially important for Japan, which is well within range of the North's long-range missiles and wants Pyongyang to resolve the emotive issue of the fate of Japanese citizens kidnapped to help train spies decades ago.

"It is very significant that we affirmed close communication with China, the chair country of the six-party talks," Noda told reporters after his meeting with Wen.

"We agreed that we need to address the (North Korean) issue calmly and properly and to keep close contact with each other."

Tom Cruise returns to box office form with "MI4" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol" easily beat its rivals in the race to No. 1 at box offices over the Christmas holiday weekend, returning action star Tom Cruise to winning form after several recent flops.

"Ghost Protocol," the fourth movie in Cruise's "Mission: Impossible" series, earned an estimated $46 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters in the four days ending on Monday, according to its distributor Paramount Pictures. Its total estimated ticket sales have reached $78.6 million after debuting in Imax and other large-screen theaters last weekend.

At international theaters, the movie dubbed "MI4", which cost around $145 million to make, sold an additional $140 million worth of tickets through Sunday. Paramount noted its audience rating from researcher CinemaScore was an "A-" and Rottentomatoes.com, a website that combines critics' reviews, gave the movie a 94 percent positive rating overall.

"We're pleased with the way we went with the movie, starting with premium pricing on large screens and letting the reviews and word-of-mouth (publicity) get out ahead of the movie," said Don Harris, president of distribution for Paramount.

Important for leading man Cruise, 49, is that after several box office flops in recent years, including dramas "Valkyrie" and "Lions for Lambs," and action-packed "Knight and Day," the success of "Ghost Protocol" has meant a return to the top of box office charts.

Elsewhere, Warner Bros.' "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" took the No. 2 spot with an estimated $31.8 million over the four days, followed by 20th Century Fox family comedy "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" with a $20 million total that barely put it ahead of No. 4, adult thriller "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," at $19.4 million.

Since its midweek debut last week, "Dragon Tattoo" has earned $27.7 million. A Sony spokesman called it "a good start" that should build this coming week and into the new year.

HO HUM 2011, DOWN 4.45 PCT

Indeed, many new movies hit theaters ahead of, and during, the Christmas holiday weekend -- including "Dragon Tattoo," two movies from Steven Spielberg, "War Horse" and "The Adventures of Tintin," and the Cameron Crowe comedy, "We Bought A Zoo."

The studios expect strong demand in the days ahead while many families take time from work and school, but it is unlikely a surge can lead the domestic box office to topple last year's nearly $10.6 billion in annual ticket sales.

In fact, the top 12 movies this past weekend generated $114 million at box offices, down about 15 percent from last year, according to box office watcher Hollywood.com.

Paul Dergarabedian of Hollywood.com now estimates total 2011 annual domestic (U.S. and Canada) box office at $10.1 billion by year's end, down 4.45 percent from 2010. Attendance so far in 2011 is off about 5 percent, while the average ticket price increased to $7.96 from $7.89.

Still, movie demand did pick up for some new titles over the weekend, and among those making a surge was Fox comedy "We Bought a Zoo," starring Matt Damon. It saw ticket sales jump 139 percent from Saturday to Sunday, its distributor 20th Century Fox said, landing it at No. 6 with $15.6 million, just behind family film "Tintin" at No. 5 with $16.1 million.

"I think playability and word-of-mouth is finally getting out" about "Zoo," said Chris Aronson, who heads domestic distribution for Fox. He noted the movie generated an "A" overall from moviegoers polled by CinemaScore.

Spielberg's "War Horse" landed in the No. 7 spot with $15 million, and another newcomer, thriller "The Darkest Hour," opened eighth with $5.5 million over the four days.

Rounding out the top 10 were holdovers "New Year's Eve" at No. 9 with slightly under $5 million and George Clooney drama "The Descendants" in the 10th position with $3.4 million.

Paramount Pictures is a unit of Viacom Inc. Warner Bros. is part of Time Warner Inc.. "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" was released by the movie studio division of Sony Pictures Entertainment, a unit of Sony Corp. "Chipwrecked" and "Zoo" were both released by film divisions of 20th Century Fox, a unit of News Corp..

Cricket LTE goes live in Tucson, introduces the Huawei Boltz

Leap Wireless, the Cricket folks, told us we can expect to see LTE service go live in Tucson before the end of the year -- and by golly, they were bound and determined to do it. Sure 'nuff, the prepaid carrier is now ready to match wits against MetroPCS as it brings its first 4G market and device live with just ten days remaining in 2011. At least 90 percent of Tucson will be able to enjoy the faster speeds, with nearby Nogales, AZ receiving some expansion love sometime in 2012 and at least two-thirds of its countrywide network benefiting from the next-gen service within the next two to three years. Its first LTE device is the Huawei Boltz -- also known as the Huawei E397 in other parts of the world -- and can be bought for $150 with no contract. Eventually, Leap says, the lineup will be expanded to include smartphones and tablets. Now, let's talk pricing: two data plans of 5GB each are available, with $50 getting you download speeds of 3Mbps and $60 offering you 6Mbps. Granted, this is nothing compared to the ultra-fast speeds you see on Verizon and AT&T's LTE networks at the moment, but it's a start.

How pregnancy changes a woman's brain

ScienceDaily (Dec. 21, 2011) ? We know a lot about the links between a pregnant mother's health, behavior, and moods and her baby's cognitive and psychological development once it is born. But how does pregnancy change a mother's brain? "Pregnancy is a critical period for central nervous system development in mothers," says psychologist Laura M. Glynn of Chapman University. "Yet we know virtually nothing about it."

Glynn and her colleague Curt A. Sandman, of University of the California Irvine, are doing something about that. Their review of the literature in Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal published by the Association for Psychological Science, discusses the theories and findings that are starting to fill what Glynn calls "a significant gap in our understanding of this critical stage of most women's lives."

At no other time in a woman's life does she experience such massive hormonal fluctuations as during pregnancy. Research suggests that the reproductive hormones may ready a woman's brain for the demands of motherhood -- helping her becomes less rattled by stress and more attuned to her baby's needs. Although the hypothesis remains untested, Glynn surmises this might be why moms wake up when the baby stirs while dads snore on. Other studies confirm the truth in a common complaint of pregnant women: "Mommy Brain," or impaired memory before and after birth. "There may be a cost" of these reproduction-related cognitive and emotional changes, says Glynn, "but the benefit is a more sensitive, effective mother."

The article reviews research that refines earlier findings on the effects of the prenatal environment on the baby. For instance, evidence is accumulating to show that it's not prenatal adversity on its own -- say, maternal malnourishment or depression -- that presents risks for a baby. Congruity between life in utero and life on the outside may matter more. A fetus whose mother is malnourished adapts to scarcity and will cope better with a dearth of food once it's born -- but could become obese if it eats normally. Timing is critical too: maternal anxiety early in gestation takes a toll on the baby's cognitive development; the same high levels of stress hormones late in pregnancy enhance it.

Just as Mom permanently affects her fetus, new science suggests that the fetus does the same for Mom. Fetal movement, even when the mother is unaware of it, raises her heart rate and her skin conductivity, signals of emotion -- and perhaps of pre-natal preparation for mother-child bonding. Fetal cells pass through the placenta into the mother's bloodstream. "It's exciting to think about whether those cells are attracted to certain regions in the brain" that may be involved in optimizing maternal behavior, says Glynn.

Glynn cautions that most research on the maternal brain has been conducted with rodents, whose pregnancies differ enormously from women's; more research on human mothers is needed. But she is optimistic that a more comprehensive picture of the persisting brain changes wrought by pregnancy will yield interventions to help at-risk mothers do better by their babies and themselves.

Iraq: Sunni-backed bloc boycotts parliament (AP)

BAGHDAD ? Iraqi Sunni-backed political bloc suspended its participation in parliament to protest the control of key posts by Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a reminder of the fragile political and sectarian situation as last U.S. soldiers rolled out of the country on Sunday.

Also in Baghdad, a bomb exploded near shops selling car parts in an eastern neighborhood, killing two people and wounding four others, police and hospital officials said. The attack was the latest in the nearly daily violence ? low-level but still deadly ? that continues to bleed Iraq as the Americans end their nearly 9-year war here.

The boycott decision by Iraqiya bloc, headed by Ayad Allawi, was in response to the government's failure to share more powers, particularly the authorities over the security forces, said Sunni lawmaker Hamid al-Mutlaq, a member of the bloc.

"We are against the concentration of security powers in the hands of one person, that is the prime minister," said al-Mutlaq.

The Iraqiya bloc narrowly won the most seats in last year's parliamentary election, but Allawi was outmaneuvered by al-Maliki, who kept the premier's post after cobbling together key support from Shiite parties.

For over a year now, al-Maliki has effectively controlled the Interior and Defense Ministries, which oversee the police and military, while conflicts between Sunni and Shiite politicians have delayed the appointment of permanent ministers.

The dispute underlines how the U.S. is leaving behind an Iraq still riven by sectarian division. The United States completed its withdrawal from the country, with the last troops crossing the border into neighboring Kuwait early Sunday. Since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein and his Sunni-dominated Baath party regime, the Sunni minority has constantly complained of attempts by the Shiite majority to sideline them.

Al-Mutlaq warned that Iraqiya could take a further step if its demands are not met ? pulling its seven ministers out of al-Maliki's coalition government.

In a statement issued Saturday, Iraiqya bloc criticized the "unjustified" random arrests conducted by the government's security forces against Sunni areas.

The boycott decision came as the parliament is preparing to discuss a series of important laws such as oil and gas law and the budget.

Judge gives Bonds house arrest, then delays it (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Barry Bonds will remain free while he appeals his conviction for giving misleading testimony before a grand jury.

A federal judge handed Bonds a sentence of 30 days of house arrest, two years of probation and 250 hours of community service on Friday ? then delayed the sentence pending an appeal likely to take a year or more.

U.S. District Judge Susan Illston also put on hold a $4,000 fine against Bonds for his obstruction of justice conviction arising from a grand jury appearance eight years ago.

Prosecutors wanted the home run king to spend 15 months in prison. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Parrella argued that home confinement wasn't punishment enough, "for a man with a 15,000 square foot house with all the advantages." Bonds lives on a nearly two-acre estate in Beverly Hills.

Parrella called the sentence a "slap on the wrist" and the fine "almost laughable" for a former baseball superstar who made millions of dollars during his career. Parrella had sought 15 months in prison, disagreeing with the judge's conclusion that the crime was "aberrant" behavior for an otherwise law-abiding Bonds who has donated money and time to charities.

"The defendant basically lived a double life for decades," argued Parrella, who said Bonds tested positive for steroids and amphetamines during his playing days. "He had mistresses throughout his marriages."

Illston said none of that had any bearing on Bonds' sentence. She agreed with a probation department report that called Bonds' conviction and "aberration" in his life. She said she received "dozens" of letters in support of Bonds and discussing how he has given money and time "for decades" to charitable causes.

Illston also said she had to remain "consistent" and give Bonds a sentence similar to those meted out to two other figures convicted of similar crimes in the same investigation.

She also noted that most obstruction cases were more serious, and often involved violence being used against witnesses.

"This sentence is an appropriate sentence for a conviction where there is no victim," said Stuart Slotnick, a former prosecutor now in private practice. "And many question the seriousness of the charges and the motivation for the prosecution."

Well-wishers hugged the 47-year-old Bonds in the hallway outside the courtroom after the hearing was over. He declined to speak in court.

A jury convicted Bonds in April of purposely answering questions about steroids with rambling non sequiturs in an attempt to mislead a grand jury investigating sports doping in December 2003. Bonds' trial jury failed to reach a verdict on three other charges accusing Bonds of lying when he denied taking performance-enhancing drugs and when he denied receiving injections from someone other than his doctor.

Prosecutors in September dropped those deadlocked charges, giving up on another trial.

His lead attorney, Allen Ruby, said Bonds will formally file a "notice of appeal" Friday.

Major League Baseball's career home runs leader, Bonds is the highest-profile defendant ? and the last ? to come out of the government's investigation of the steroids distribution ring built around the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, founded by Victor Conte.

Besides the seven-time MVP, 10 people were convicted of various charges. Six of them, including track star Marion Jones, were ensnared for lying to grand jurors, federal investigators or the court. Others, including Bonds' personal trainer Greg Anderson, pleaded guilty to steroid distribution charges.

Bonds was one of two former baseball superstars to stand trial in doping-related cases this year. The trial of pitcher Roger Clemens was halted after just two days in July because prosecutors used inadmissible evidence. U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton has set a new trial for April 17.

'Barefoot Bandit' says broken home sparked international crime spree

It's a sensational story with a Hollywood deal, but the adventures of Colton Harris-Moore, aka 'The Barefoot Bandit,' is really a tragedy, his attorneys tell a judge at a hearing Friday.

Colton Harris-Moore, a high school dropout known as the "Barefoot Bandit," is painted in popular culture as a survivalist genius who rebelled against society by stealing planes, boats, and SUVs during a two-year crime spree across the US and the Caribbean, giving the law the slip at every turn.

But as Mr. Harris-Moore, who was captured after a July 2010 boat chase in the Bahamas, faces sentencing in Island County, Wash., on Friday, his attorneys are painting a different version of Harris-Moore's life ? not as the adventures of a modern-day folk hero, but as a tragedy.

Facing up to 10 years in prison for a string of at least 30 thefts and burglaries, Harris-Moore is pleading with the judge to consider a psychological profile that describes a traumatized and often hungry boy from a broken home, lashing out at his "abusive" mother with ever more extravagant stunts and heists.

"What was characterized by the media as the swashbuckling adventures of a rakish teenager were in fact the actions of a depressed, possibly suicidal young man with waxing and waning Post-traumatic Stress Disorder," writes Dr. Richard Adler, a forensic psychiatrist, in the defense report being considered by Judge Vickie Churchill.

Earlier this year,?Harris-Moore pled guilty to separate federal charges for the two-year crime spree, with total damages equaling about $3 million. A set of chalk-outlined barefoot prints at one scene gave him the moniker Barefoot Bandit, which Harris-Moore eventually adopted as his exploits and fame grew. By the time of his capture, his Facebook page had 85,000 fans, one of whom wrote upon his capture, "Dude, bummer you got caught, but you made history and no one will ever forget that."

For Judge Churchill, consideration of Harris-Moore's troubled childhood will have to be weighed against both the severity of the crimes, his guilty plea, as well as the overarching message her ruling will send both to Harris-Moore and to other young people who may be contemplating a life of criminal exploit.

"One of the issues for the judge will be, is he dangerous?" says James Alan Fox, a criminologist at Northeastern University in Boston, who has written about Harris-Moore. "If there's a shorter penalty, will he see this as a slap on the wrist and feel encouraged to continue his criminal ways ? and his fan club?"

Despite Harris-Moore's troubled childhood, Professor Fox says, "he still knew what he was doing was wrong, which means it's important that there's a substantial sanction here in order to send a very clear message that he is not someone to be admired, and that for us to stand on the sidelines to applaud his elusiveness ignores the harm that he was creating and the destruction he was causing."

Harris-Moore's lawyer says the teenager has composed a "beautiful letter" he will read to the judge, but it's far from clear his testimony will sway his victims, many of whom are expected in court.

Ljubljana mayor ahead in Slovenia election upset (Reuters)

LJUBLJANA (Reuters) ? The centre-left mayor of Slovenia's capital Ljubljana was headed for victory in a parliamentary election on Sunday, early results showed, making the outgoing Social Democrats the latest casualties of the euro zone economic crisis.

The defeat for Prime Minister Borut Pahor was expected, but the victory for Ljubljana Mayor Zoran Jankovic, if confirmed, would mark an upset after weeks of opinion polls predicting a comfortable win for centre-right ex-prime minister Janez Jansa.

With nearly a third of votes counted, Jankovic's party was leading with 29.5 percent of the vote over Jansa's party with 25.9 percent and Pahor's party with less than 10.3 percent.

Jankovic will have to seek coalition partners, and Pahor said his party was ready to talk.

"We are open for dialogue," the outgoing prime minister told Pop Television. "We have to think of the future of this country."

An Alpine state of 2 million people, EU and euro zone member Slovenia was once a model of successful post-communist transition but is now facing renewed economic contraction, rising unemployment and the threat of a credit rating downgrade.

Pahor's government lost its majority in May amid internal policy squabbles and was ousted by parliament in September.
