Pope's Twitter handle @Pontifex; will be Q&A

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI will start tweeting in six languages from his own personal handle (at)Pontifex on Dec. 12.

The Vatican said Monday the pope will be using a question and answer format in his first Tweet, focusing on answering questions about faith ? in 140 characters.

The pope sent his first tweet last year from a Vatican account to launch the Holy See's news information portal. The Vatican's communications adviser Greg Burke told a press conference that the handle (at)Pontifex was chosen for the pope's personal account because it not only means pope in Latin, but also bridge-builder, suggesting unity. How often will the pope tweet? Burke said, "as often as he wants."

The Vatican has been increasing its presence in social media to try to spread the faith, particularly among the young.

95% Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel

All Critics (62) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (59) | Rotten (3)

Her life, and her work, transcended what we think of as "fashion." Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel celebrates a unique and uniquely determined woman.

Many people remember some of Diana Vreeland's famous pronouncements ("I adore pink! It is the navy blue of India!") but few remember actually hearing her speak. The documentary Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel takes care of that.

For fashionphiles and pop culture vultures, there's much to devour.

Diana Vreeland is both history lesson and sentimental love letter to a fashion titan.

Legendary fashion editor Diana Vreeland was the consummate dreamer, a romantic who never looked back and propelled society forward.

A feast for fashion-history buffs and anyone who applauds unstoppable eccentricity.

An otherwise fine profile of American fashion magazine doyen Diana Vreeland is let down by pedestrian production.

She wanted you to look and look again, and this film is full of images which make you do just that.

There's something marvellously comic about her, an effect reinforced by her refined yet raucous baritone voice.

This pleasurable documentary is jammed packed with images from magazines, photoshoots and newsreels of a life well lived, but also lots of historical footage of the life Vreeland imagined she had too.

...more of an energetic and affectionate sketch than a revealing portrait of this oversized personality, but one has to wonder if the woman who celebrated glittering surfaces would have wanted it any other way.

This fascinating documentary reveals that Vreeland (who died in 1989, aged 86) was an original: a dynamic woman with energy to spare and an infectious lust for life

What makes this such a joy to watch is not just the timeline of fashion highlights, but Vreeland's unique perspective on life.

The filmmakers have done a fine job corralling so many fantastic tales from Vreeland's life.

"Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel" is an intriguing portrait of a true original; you only wish the movie had half the color and verve of its subject.

A lively movie, and in the case of its appearance-obsessed subject, it feels right that all it does is skim the surface.

[Vreeland's] influence on twentieth-century culture was large, and it's celebrated here with affection, dedication and skill--but very little critical detachment.

Though unwilling to dig too deeply into what seems an imperfect private life, it still serves as a splendid introduction to a unique personality.

A poignant portrait of an inveterate iconoclast who couldn't help but push the envelope.

Calhoun reveals he had cancer surgery in May

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? Former Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun revealed on Monday that he had surgery in May to remove an apparent cancerous growth from his lungs.

Calhoun mentioned the surgery Monday while taping an episode of YES Network's Center Stage with Michael Kay in New York.

Calhoun told YES that doctors removed the growth, concerned it might be related to a previous skin cancer.

Reached later by telephone, Calhoun was asked to clarify whether the growth was cancer.

"It was cancer-related, yes," he told The Associated Press. "I'm not going to talk about it. I was out for a day and a half. I'm completely healthy now."

Calhoun, who also had spinal surgery in February, retired in September weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured hip suffered in an August bicycling accident.

The three surgeries "took a toll on my body," Calhoun told YES, "and I was tired. Now, the energy level I feel is much different."

The 70-year-old Calhoun, who is still using a cane while recovering from that surgery, also told YES that he has not completely ruled out a return to coaching.

"I would never say never," Calhoun told YES.

Calhoun was 873-380 in 40 seasons as a head coach, 26 of them at Connecticut, the other 14 at Northeastern.

Calhoun led UConn to national titles in 1999, 2004 and 2011, an NIT championship in 1988, 10 Big East regular-season championships and seven Big East Tournament titles. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005.

But along the way, he suffered from a string of health problems.

He is a three-time cancer survivor, overcoming prostate cancer in 2003 and skin cancer twice, most recently in 2008. He missed 29 games over his 40-year career because of various medical conditions and had to leave another 11 games for medical reasons.

Calhoun missed eight games last season because of the effects of spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spine, normally associated with aging and sometimes with arthritis, which led to surgery to have a disk fragment removed from his spine.

He returned to the sideline just five days after that operation.

In 1999, Calhoun coached the Huskies to a 34-2 record and their first NCAA championship, a 77-74 upset over Duke.

In 2004, the Huskies started and ended the season at No. 1, beating Georgia Tech in the NCAA championship game 82-73. The Huskies, led by Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon, won their six tournament games by an average of over 17 points.

In 2011, the Huskies, led by Kemba Walker, finished the regular season in ninth place in the Big East before reeling off a remarkable 11 consecutive wins during the postseason, including a 53-41 victory over Butler in the national championship game.

Calhoun is currently serving as a special assistant to the athletic director at UConn, and among other things is helping raise money for the school to build a $40-million training facility, with construction slated to begin in the spring.

(AP Photo/CBS News, Chris Usher)

(AP) ? Republicans have to stop using "political math" and say how much they are willing to raise tax rates on the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans and then specify the spending cuts they want, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said in an interview that aired Sunday.

Just four weeks from the proverbial "fiscal cliff," House Speaker John Boehner countered that Republicans have a plan for providing as much as $800 billion in new government revenue over the next decade and would consider the elimination of tax deductions on high-income earners. But when pressed on "Fox News Sunday" for precise details, the Ohio Republican declined to say.

There are "a lot of options in terms of how to get there," Boehner said.

Both Boehner's and Geithner's latest remarks indicate it could be some time before serious negotiations begin between the White House and Republicans on how to avert economic calamity expected in less than a month when President George W. Bush-era tax cuts expire and automatic, across-the-board spending cuts kick in.

Last week, the White House delivered to Capitol Hill its opening plan: $1.6 trillion in higher taxes over a decade, hundreds of billions of dollars in new spending, a possible extension of the temporary Social Security payroll tax cut and enhancing the president's power to raise the national debt limit.

In exchange, the president would back $600 billion in spending cuts, including $350 billion from Medicare and other health programs. But he also wants $200 billion in new spending for jobless benefits, public works projects and aid for struggling homeowners. His proposal for raising the ceiling on government borrowing would make it virtually impossible for Congress to block him.

Republicans said they responded in closed-door meetings with laughter and disbelief.

"I was just flabbergasted," Boehner said. "I looked at him (Geithner) and I said, 'You can't be serious.'" Boehner described negotiations as going "nowhere, period," and said "there's clearly a chance" the nation will go over the cliff.

Geithner, the administration's point man for negotiations, was slightly more optimistic while saying the ball was in Boehner's court. But the treasury secretary also said he didn't expect a counteroffer right away, as Republicans work to sort out tensions within the party in the wake of bruising national elections that left Democrats in charge of the White House and the Senate.

Boehner acknowledged in his interview, aired Sunday, that he wasn't happy with public remarks by Republican Rep. Tom Cole of Oklahoma, who said he was ready to go along with Obama's plan to renew expiring income tax cuts for the majority of Americans and negotiate the rates on top earners later.

"They're trying to figure out where they go next," Geithner said of Republicans, "and we might need to give them a little time to figure out where they go next."

He called the back-and-forth "normal political theater," saying all that's blocking a timely deal is the GOP's reluctance to accept higher tax rates on the wealthy.

"It's welcome that they're recognizing that revenues are going to have to go up. But they haven't told us anything about how far rates should go up ... (and) who should pay higher taxes," Geithner said.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said Sunday that she will try to force a vote on the Senate-passed bill favored by Democrats to avert a fiscal cliff. But she was unlikely to line up enough Republicans to succeed.

Republican leaders have said they accept higher tax revenue overall, but only through what they call tax reform __ closing loopholes and limiting deductions __ and only coupled with tough measures to curb the explosive growth of Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

"If we gave the president $1.6 trillion of new money, what do you think he'd do with it?" asked Boehner. "He's going to spend it. It's what Washington does."

Cole didn't back down Sunday on his earlier comments that Republicans should agree to Obama's plan for continuing Bush's tax rates for middle-class America and focus the negotiations on the other issues. Doing so, he said, would make the GOP position even stronger.

"The reality is, nobody can look at this budget and think if you don't reform entitlements you can balance it. You can give the president every tax increase he's asked for, you'd still be in the hole," he said.

Geithner appeared on CBS' "Face the Nation," NBC's "Meet the Press," CNN's "State of the Union," ABC's "This Week" and "Fox News Sunday." Cole appeared on ABC "This Week."

Guard says Manning protest annoyed brig staff

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) ? Some workers at a Marine Corps brig housing a soldier charged with sending U.S. secrets to WikiLeaks became annoyed at a demonstration on his behalf the day before a confrontation that led to tighter restrictions on him, a former guard testified Saturday.

The testimony by former Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jonathan Cline undercut government efforts to show that Pfc. Bradley Manning's tight confinement conditions were justified to prevent him from killing or hurting himself. The defense claims the nine months Manning spent in virtual isolation, sometimes without clothing, amounted to illegal pretrial punishment. Manning and his attorneys want all the charges dismissed.

Cline testified on the fifth day of a pretrial hearing at Fort Meade, near Baltimore.

He was called as a prosecution witness to talk about a Jan. 18, 2011, incident in which Manning hid behind an exercise machine and wept after he was scolded by another guard for failing to respond properly to a command. Later that day, the brig commander, Chief Warrant Officer 4 James Averhart, added "suicide risk" to Manning's maximum-custody conditions. That was after they had what Manning described as a heated argument about the incident.

Manning testified Thursday that the guards seemed angry that morning as they escorted him in leg irons and handcuffs to an exercise room. He said their attitude made him nervous, culminating in his odd behavior.

"I thought I was going to be attacked or assaulted or something like that," Manning said.

Cline testified that some brig workers were annoyed that a pro-Manning protest a day earlier had closed Quantico's main gate, forcing them to take alternate routes home. Cline said he wasn't personally affected by it. Defense attorney David Coombs has implied the guards took out their irritation on Manning by bullying him.

Cline and another former guard, Marine Lance Cpl. Joshua Tankersly, both testified that except for the Jan. 18 incident, Manning was always compliant and respectful.

Another former brig worker, Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. William Fuller, testified that Manning was often uncommunicative and withdrawn, possibly signaling a suicide risk.

Fuller testified that before Jan. 18, he had considered recommending to Averhart that Manning be removed from "prevention-of-injury," or POI, status because of his improved behavior. Manning was on either POI or even more restrictive "suicide risk" status during his entire stay at Quantico in maximum custody.

His behavior Jan. 18 "gave us cause for concern," Fuller said. "That kind of reset things, unfortunately."

Manning was at Quantico from July 2010 to April 2011. Then he was moved to pretrial confinement at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He has been held in medium custody since arriving there.

The 24-year-old native of Crescent, Okla., worked as an intelligence analyst in Baghdad in 2009 and 2010. He is charged with 22 offenses, including aiding the enemy and violating federal espionage and computer security laws. He could get life in prison.

He is accused of sending to the website WikiLeaks more than 250,000 diplomatic cables, classified memos, Iraq and Afghanistan war logs, Guantanamo Bay prison records and a 2007 video clip of a U.S. helicopter crew gunning down 11 men. It was later determined that one of those men was a news photographer. The Pentagon said its troops mistook camera equipment for weapons.

Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn Residents Frustrated By Lack Of FEMA Trailers (VIDEO)

Residents of a neighborhood heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy are asking a pressing question: Where are the trailers?

As New York's ABC 7 reported on Thursday, there are many displaced families in the storm-ravaged Gerritsen Beach area of Brooklyn. The neighborhood seems to have plenty of space for the trailers that could serve as much-needed housing, but the Federal Emergency Management Agency's "head of operations in New York says nearly every government agency ruled out trailers because of a lack of space."

When questioned about the potential space that could be utilized for trailers, FEMA's Michael Byrne told ABC 7, "You know we're always open to recommendations people make but at this point in time we think solutions we got in place will solve the problem."

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle reports that FEMA opened a Mobile Disaster Recovery Center in Gerritsen Beach, but the lack of trailers remains a major concern. Michael Taylor of Gerritsen Beach Cares told ABC 7, "I'm really worried there's going to be an elderly person or someone with disability that's going to freeze to death."

According to the New York Daily News, more bad news could be coming to the Gerritsen Beach community in the form of higher insurance premiums. The publication reports that FEMA "plans to redraw flood maps next year," and the consequences could hit residents hard:

The revised maps are expected to label Gerritsen Beach a high-risk flood zone where for the first time mortgage lenders will require residents to get pricey flood insurance - and their homeowners insurance premiums will get jacked up.

[State Sen. Marty Golden (R-Gerritsen Beach)] vowed to hold state hearings to push for insurance rates that aren?t "ruinous" for the neighborhood?s blue-collar homeowners. "This will be a huge expense," he said.

HuffPost's Eamon Murphy reported last month on the damage sustained by Gerritsen Beach. Murphy spoke to Anthony Testaverde, special assistant to state Sen. Golden:

According to Testaverde, New York City officials have been helpful, bringing in cots and water and lending a MTA bus. But residents complained of being neglected by relief agencies. They had praise for the police and fire departments, but several asked pointedly where the Red Cross and FEMA were, despite occasional reported sightings. (Testaverde described searching houses with a FEMA employee; in one home, he said, they discovered a man who had drowned.) And everyone seemed to agree that City Hall had erred badly in designating Gerritsen Beach -- which is surrounded by water on three sides -- as part of Zone B, meaning that evacuation was not required.

?This should have been an A zone,? Testaverde said. ?Whenever you get storms, any type of storms, there?s always water.?

Full video of ABC 7's report on the FEMA trailers can be viewed above.
